Whether you prefer to take things a little slower or if you’re a hard-core adrenaline junkie, there is something for everyone here.
Below we have listed our top 10 favourite things to do in Thredbo and in Kosciuszko National Park during Spring and Summer. While this list is by no means complete, it should give you a taste of what’s on offer. Speak to our friendly staff for directions from House of Ullr which is conveniently located to everything the area has to offer. We are happy to suggest more obscure things to do, depending upon your personal requirements, especially for those who prefer to get off the tourist trail.
Kosciuszko Express Chairlift
The scenic Kosciuszko Express Chairlift at Thredbo is open all year – even Christmas Day. The chairlift is 1.8km long and rises to 560 vertical metres where you’ll be awe-inspired by spectacular views over the valley. Taking around 15 minutes, the chairlift gets you to the closest point of Mt Kosciuszko.
Thredbo Bobsled
The 700 metre luge-style Thredbo bobsled track twists and turns as it winds through the Thredo wilderness. Sure to bring a smile to your face, you control the braking so can go as fast or slow as you desire. Just as much fun is watching from the purpose-built viewing platform on the Thredbo River. The Thredbo Bobsled is only open during the summer months.
Thredbo River fishing
Try your luck at fly-fishing on the pristine Thredbo River. Filled with tasty trout, fish from the riverbank or on the water. Fly-fishing lessons and fishing equipment are readily available for hire. Ask our friendly staff for more information.
The Snowy Mountains Trout Festival, held on Lake Jindabyne (30 minutes from House of Ullr) is a must-see for any fisherman or woman.
Mountain climbing and abseiling
When the snow clears in Spring and Summer, the spectacular Thredbo mountains are a magnet for mountain climbers and abseilers. Qualified instructors are available to “show you the ropes”. Ask us for more information.
Thredbo Golf Course
One to tick of your bucket list is a round of golf at Thredbo Golf Course, Australia’s highest course. Bordered by the Thredbo River, the course is AGU rated and is both challenging and unique. Finish with a drink at the restaurant overlooking the Thredbo River. Keep your eyes peeled as you may even spot a platypus.
Disc Golf
Utilising the same rules as “traditional golf”, in a game of disc golf discs (like frisbees) are used instead of golf balls. Players throw their disc from the tee area, completing the hole by successfully landing it in an elevated metal basket in the least amount of throws possible. Located in the Friday Flat area, the Friday Flat Disc Golf Course is a 10-15 minute walk (700 metres) from House of Ullr.
Horse Riding
Ranging from beginner strolls to overnight camp-outs, horse riding in the Thredbo mountains is the perfect way to see the natural bush scenery and wildflowers and spot some Australian native wildlife.
Wildlife Spotting
The native fauna that make the Thredbo mountains and valleys their home can be elusive, particularly in the colder months when many hibernate making Spring and Summer the best time for wildlife spotting. If you walk quietly and tread carefully you’re likely to see wallabies hopping through the bush, wombats ambling across the plains, possums and squirrel gliders in the trees and even a highly elusive platypus in the river.
Mountain Biking
Thredbo is one of Australia’s best-known mounting biking destinations and ranks high on most riders lists. Thredbo Mountain Bike Park offers epic alpine mountain biking for all ages and skill levels. With downhill tracks, cross country trails and skill parks, Thredbo mountain biking takes this popular sport to a whole new level – and elevation.
